Thomas William Worthington was born in Bilby, South Retford, Nottinghamshire. A Labourer by occupation and a former member of the 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, he attested for the Royal Regiment of Artillery at Lincoln on 4 January 1899, aged 20 years, 3 months. Posted to the R.G.A., he served in South Africa, November 1899-July 1900; China, July 1900-August 1901, and India, August 1901-March 1907. Transferred to the Army Reserve in March 1907; he was discharged having completed his period of service on 3 January 1911. With copied service papers.
