William McBean was born in the Parish of Alves, Elgin, and attested for the Seaforth Highlanders on 9 July 1895, aged 18 years, a tailor by trade. He served with the Nile Expedition in the Sudan in 1898, in the occupation of Crete in 1899, and in the South African War in 1901-02, during which he served with the 18th Mounted Infantry. He was discharged in the rank of Lance-Corporal on 8 July 1907. Sold with copied discharge papers and medal roll extracts.
