John Wilson was born in Dundee. He attested for the 92nd Regiment at Westminster on 18 May 1868, aged 14 years. Initially ranked as a Boy, he became a Private in May 1869 and a Drummer in January 1873. Appointed a Bandsman in July 1884. Served in the East Indies, October 1872-March 1879; Afghanistan, March 1879-October 1880; East Indies, October 1880-February 1881; Egypt, December 1883-February 1884; Eastern Sudan, February-March 1884; Egypt, April 1884-September 1885; Malta, September 1885-November 1888; Ceylon, November 1888-April 1889.
