Estimate: £80–£100

An original ship’s service certificate appertaining to William Davey, Royal Navy, for his service in H.M.S. Cambridge in the period November 1823 to June 1827, signed by Captain (afterwards Vice-Admiral of the Red) Thomas Maling, R.N., with printed Prize Money notice to reverse, 21cm. by 16cm., wear and tear as expected, but overall the printed text and hand written detail in good condition £80-100

During his time in the Cambridge under Captain Thomas Marling, R.N., Davey would have been present during that ship’s passage to the Americas with the first British diplomatic mission to Chile, so, too, in September 1824, during an episode with a Spanish gunboat. As for Maling, a veteran of many actions in the Napoleonic Wars, including St. Vincent, he attained advancement to Vice-Admiral of the Red in November 1841.
