No. 70 Squadron was formed at Farnborough in April 1916 and was the first in the R.F.C. to equip with the Sopwith Strutters. The unit moved to France in flights during May-August 1916, under the command of Major A. W. Tedder. During July 1917 it became the first squadron to receive Sopwith Camels.
