United States Submarine ‘Trigger’ Battle Pennant, a very fine example on ivory silk decorated with the ship’s title, a submarine, the dates 1942-44 and Japanese insignia, this remarkable vessel carried out no less than twelve successful patrols between 1942 and 1945. She accounted for a large number of the enemy’s vessels and received a Presidential Unit Citation. Sold together with full documentation concerning her exploits and officers, very good condition £200-300

U.S.S. Trigger was a Gato-class submarine, launched from the Mare Island Navy Yard, California on 22 October 1941. She was first commissioned on 30 January 1942 and sailed for Hawaii in May. Under various skippers she carried out twelve successful patrols during the years 1942-45. She was credited with sinking 18 Japanese ships, totaling some 86,500 tons. U.S.S. Trigger is believed to have been sunk in action in the East China Sea on 28 March 1945 during her twelfth and last patrol.

The pennant, dated 1942-1944, bears the ship’s name, pennant number ‘SS-237’; with five Japanese Naval Ensign and 37 Japanese National Flag symbols.

She was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation:

‘For outstanding performance in combat during her Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh War Patrols against the enemy. Employing highly daring and hazardous tactics, the U.S.S.
Trigger struck at the enemy with consistent aggressiveness, seeking out and pursuing her targets with dogged determination regardless of unfavorable attack conditions. Her exceptionally notable record of severe damage inflicted on hostile shipping and the gallant fighting spirit of her officers and men reflect great credit upon the United States Naval Service.’
