Waterloo 1815 (Ensign William Smith 1st Batt. 71st Reg. Foot.) fitted with original steel clip and ring suspension, minor edge bruising, otherwise good very fine £4000-5000

Ex Adam Watson Collection 1944.

William Smith was born at Ballimena, Co. Antrim, in 1784. He was appointed Ensign in the 71st Foot on 1 September 1813, at the age of nineteen. The second senior Ensign in the regiment at Waterloo, he was promoted to Lieutenant on 18 July 1815 and placed on half-pay on 24 December 1815, upon the reduction of the regiment. Lieutenant Smith later lived at Ballimena, where he died on 23 April 1860.
