Naval General Service 1793-1840, 3 clasps, 28 June Boat Service 1810, Lissa, Pelagosa 29 Novr. 1811 (John Hawkes) good very fine £6000-7000

Ex Payne Collection 1911, Phillips Collection 1925, and Glendining’s September 1961. Another man with this name received the N.G.S. with clasps for Martinique, Anse la Barque and Guadaloupe; his medal was sold by Glendining in June 1904 and by Spink in July 1952.

26 clasps issued for ‘28 June Boat Service 1810’; 132 for ‘Lissa’; and 67 for ‘Pelagosa 29 Novr. 1811’. Six medals were issued with this three-clasp combination.

John Hawkes (Hawke in muster lists and
London Gazette) joined H.M.S. Active as a Private Royal Marines from the R.M. Headquarters at Chatham on 31 August 1809. He served continuously aboard the Active until he was paid off on 11 June 1812 and was present in that ship for all three actions commemorated on his medal. He was wounded in the action off the Island of Lissa, 13 March 1811 (London Gazette 1811) and again in the action at Pelagosa (London Gazette 1812).
