M.M. London Gazette 16 October 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty in the matter of attending to wounded. As Company Stretcher-Bearer, he went out and dressed and assisted to remove three wounded men whilst openly exposed to heavy and continuous shell fire.’

Ernest Haggis was born in London, England, on 27 September 1887. A Farmer by occupation, he enlisted into the 209th (Swift Current) Battalion in May 1916, but was transferred to the 102nd (North British Columbians) Battalion on his arrival in England at the end of the year. Wounded at the Battle of Lens on 17 August 1917, when he suffered a gun shot wound to the left chest, he was afterwards awarded the M.M. In October 1918 he was transferred to England with a view to obtaining a commission but with the end of the war he was discharged in March 1919; sold with copied service papers.
