Albert Daniel Dyer Matthews was born at Pembroke Dock, Wales, on 19 July 1878. A Caretaker by occupation, he enlisted into the 215th Battalion at Burford in March 1916, having served for 12 years in the Imperial Army, three years in the 38th Dufferin Rifles and two years in the 25th Brant Dragoons. Posted to the 54th (Kootenay) Battalion, he was killed in action on 2 September 1918 during the battle of the Drocourt-Quéant Line. He was buried in the Dury Mill British Cemetery, Pas de Calais. Matthews was the son of Albert and Jessie Matthews, of 1A Paradise Place, Stoke, Devonport, England; sold with copied service papers.
