M.M. London Gazette 19 November 1917. The original recommendation states:

‘For conspicuous bravery and distinguished conduct in action. On 16 August 1917, this N.C.O. established a block in the enemy communication trench, placing it as far forward as our barrage would permit. He then did his utmost to keep the post supported with bombs but as the enemy were making repeated attempts to drive the post out the supply could not be kept up. He was severely wounded while gathering bombs from the dead. His determination and coolness in the handling of this post undoubtedly saved us many casualties if not the possession of the Chalk Pit. He was a valorous soldier throughout.’

Jason G. Smart was born in Shawville on 23 December 1897 and attested for service at Edmonton in September 1915. Serving with the ‘10th Canadians’ out in France, he was awarded the M.M. for the above cited deeds in August 1917, when he was severely wounded. Returning to active duty in November 1917, he died of gunshot wounds to his thigh and chest on 4 September 1918, and was buried in the Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension. Smart was the son of Alexander S. and Rachel Smart of Edmonton, Alberta; sold with copied service papers.
