Robert Leggate was born in Avondale, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. He attested for the 45th Regiment at Glasgow on 25 December 1837, aged 18 years. With them he served overseas in Gibraltar for 18 months, in Monte Video for 10 months and in the Cape of Good Hope Province for 12 years, 8 months. Served in both the Second and Third Kaffir Wars. Discharged at his own request on 21 May 1859. With copied discharge papers.
