Frederick James Grimbly was born on 14 October 1866. He served in the ranks of the Army for 7 years, 230 days and as a Warrant Officer for 7 years, 80 days. Appointed a Superintending Clerk with the Royal Engineers on 1 April 1893 and Hon. Lieutenant and Quartermaster on 20 June 1900.

During the Boer War he was employed at the H.Q. Natal. Served in the relief of Ladysmith, including the battle of Colenso, operations of 17-24 January 1900, and actions at Spion Kop, operations of 5-7 February 1900, the action at Vaal Kranz, operations on Tugela Heights, 14-27 February 1900 and the action at Pieter’s Hill. Then in operations in Natal, March-June 1900, including the action at Laing’s Nek, 6-9 June. Operations in Transvaal, east of Pretoria, July-October 1900, including the action at Belfast, 26-27 August and Lydenberg, 5-8 September 1900. Afterwards attached to the H.Q. Staff as Secretary to the Financial Adviser. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with seven clasps and was mentioned in despatches (
London Gazette 8 February 1901).

After the war Grimbly was advanced to Hon Captain and Quartermaster in June 1910; Hon Major and Quartermaster in June 1915 and Hon Lieutenant-Colonel and Quartermaster in June 1917. He retired on 24 April 1918. With copied research.
