George Charlton was born in Greenwich, Kent. An Electrical Engineer by occupation, and a member of the Electrical Engineers R.E. (Volunteers) he attested for short service with the Royal Engineers at London on 24 February 1900, aged 30 years, 8 months. He served in South Africa, March-December 1900. Charlton was one of a party of 50 men and 300 natives taken prisoner at Leeuw Spruit, 14 June 1900. They had been engaged in repairing a railway bridge when they were attacked by Boer forces commanded by De Wet. Charlton later escaped. Charlton was discharged at his own request on 7 January 1901.
