William Griffiths was born in Liverpool. A Labourer by occupation and a former member of the 3rd Battalion Liverpool Regiment, he attested for the West Yorkshire Regiment at Liverpool on 21 July 1897, aged 18 years, 10 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, October 1899-June 1904. Transferred to the Army Reserve in July 1904, he was discharged at the termination of his period of service on 20 July 1909. For his service in the Boer War he was awarded the Queen’s medal with five clasps and the King’s medal with two.

With copied service papers. Also with research indicating Griffiths, as a member of the 4th Reserve Battalion Cheshire Regiment, died at ‘Home’ on 28 October 1918, aged 40 years. The husband of Alice Griffiths, of 60 Belle Vue Road, Seacombe, Wallasey; he was buried in Wallasey (Rake Lane) Cemetery.
