Edward Powell was born in Amesbury, Wiltshire. A Carpenter by occupation, he attested for the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester on 19 October 1881, aged 20 years. With the 1st Battalion he served in Malta, July 1884-January 1886; India, January 1886-November 1888; Burma, November 1888-January 1891; East India, January 1891-January 1893; Egypt, January-April 1893. Transferred to the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment in November 1892, he was discharged at his own request on 4 December 1893. With copied service papers.
