Clarinda Rowbotham was a founding member of the Mossley St. John Ambulance centre in 1907, and of the Ambulance and Nursing Divisons in 1911. During 1911-37 she held the post of Lady Superintendent in the S.J.A.B. She acted as Honorary Instructor in all First Aid and Home Nursing Classes. During 1914-19 she gave ‘continuous voluntary service’ to the Auxiliary Military Hospital, Mossley, for which service she was awarded the A.R.R.C. - this presented to her by the Lord Lieutenant at Preston Town Hall, 6 April 1921. She was Lady Superintendent of St. John V.A.D. from 1913 and appointed Commandant in 1924. For her many services to the St. John organisation, she was appointed a Serving Sister in 1937. Registered as a S.R.N. (No. 32048) on 20 June 1924. Awarded the St. John Service Medal in 1926 and a bar (not with lot) in 1931.
