Three: Private D. Asprea, South Staffordshire Regiment, who was killed in action on the Somme on 1 July 1916

David Asprea, who was born in Wolverhampton, first entered the French theatre of war in early March 1915, and was killed in action on the Somme on 1 July 1916, while serving in the 1/6th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Ordered to attack Gommecourt Wood, his Battalion went over the top at 7.30 a.m. in the face of intense enemy fire, some 240 men becoming casualties within a matter of minutes. Asprea has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
