Six: Air Mechanic 1st Class W. G. S. Barnes, Royal Air Force, late Royal Naval Air Service

1914-15 Star (F. 4109 W. G. S. Barnes, A.M. 2, R.N.A.S.); British War and Victory Medals (F. 4109 W. G. S. Barnes, A.M. 1, R.N.A.S.), with original lid of box of issue for these two; 1939-45 Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, these last three in their original Air Ministry card forwarding box, the third with officially re-impressed naming, generally good very fine (6) £80-100

William George Startup Barnes was born at West Malling, Kent, in January 1892, and entered the Royal Naval Air Service as a Probationary Air Mechanic 2nd Class in April 1915. Employed as an Airship and Balloon Rigger for the remainder of the War, he served in the kite balloon ship Menelaus until March 1917, in the seaplane tender and carrier Campania until March 1918, and thereafter at the R.N.A.S. Scapa Flow base Icarus, in which period he was also advanced to Air Mechanic 1st Class. Post-war, Barnes served in 31 Wing in Egypt and, after being discharged in March 1923, was employed as a chauffeur. Recalled on the renewal of hostilities in September 1939, he appears to have served as a driver and, judging by his 1939-35 Star, served with the B.E.F. or in Norway; sold with copied service records.
