F. H. Symons was born in 1866 at King Williams Town and was educated at K.W.T. Diocesan School and Dale College. Served in the K.W.T. Volunteer Rifles and K.W.T. Artillery. Was with the B.S.A. Police in the Mashonaland expedition of 1890-91. Was Captain in the Kaffrarian Rifles during the Boer War and was present at Wepener.
