Robert Field was born in Newark. A Baker by occupation and a member of the 8th Battalion Notts. & Derby. Regiment, he attested for the Special Reserve Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters at Newark on 8 January 1909, aged 18 years, 9 months. Served with the 1st Battalion in France, 10 December 1914-8 January 1915. Having contracted rheumatic fever he was considered unfit for further military service and was discharged on 5 June 1915. Was awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot).
