Johnson served with the Notts. & Derbys for 15 years before resigning his commission on 11 November 1911. As a Lieutenant he was captured by the Boers at Rhenoster River, 7 June 1900 and released on 26 July 1900. He was personally presented with his Q.S.A. by the King on 29 July 1901. Major Johnson rejoined the 4th Battalion in 1914 and served throughout the war.
