Citation: ‘For gallantry and devotion to duty when in an attack at San Sisto Ridge, Italy, 15 June 1918.’ (ref.
British Gallantry Awards, The Sherwood Foresters, compiled by C. Housley).

Varney was awarded the M.M. for bravery in the attack on San Sisto Ridge, near Asaigo, Italy on 15 June 1918. In the same action, Captain (Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel) Charles Edward Hudson, D.S.O. & Bar, M.C., 11th Battalion Sherwood Foresters, won the Victoria Cross.

Serjeant Arthur Varney, M.M., 11th Battalion Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment, was killed in action in France on 4 October 1918, aged 20 years. He was buried in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy. Arthur Varney was the son of Arthur and Zipporah Varney, of 4 Field Row, Belper, Derbyshire.
