Samuel Rainey was born in Lisburn, Co. Antrim. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Corps of Lancers of the Line at Belfast on 2 August 1902, aged 18 years, 4 months. Posted to the 5th Lancers, he served in India, September 1905-February 1910. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in August 1910 and was discharged in August 1914. Returning for service in the Great War, he served with the North Irish Horse, entering the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 September 1915. With them he was awarded the M.M. for bravery in the field. He was later awarded the M.S.M. Note that the m.i.c. for the M.S.M. gives his unit as ‘North Irish Horse’, whereas the medal gives ‘South Irish Horse’. Later served in the Corps of Hussars. Discharged to Class ‘Z’ Reserve on 3 March 1919.
