A Great War M.M. group of five awarded to Private R. Blythe, 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, killed in action 2 December 1917.

Robert Blythe was born in Edinburgh. A Slater by occupation, he attested for the Highland Light Infantry in Edinburgh on 15 December 1896, aged 18 years, 7 months. With the 1st Battalion he served in Malta, March 1897-June 1898; Crete, June-December 1898; South Africa, October 1899-January 1904 and Egypt. In October 1904 he was transferred to the Army Reserve and was discharged in 1908. Returning to the Army in the Great War, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 December 1914 (awarded the 1914-15 Star - not with lot). Blythe won a M.M. for bravery in the field while serving with the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry. He was killed in action on 2 December 1917.
