William Samuel Smyth was born in Kilcorig House, Magheragall, Lisburn, Co. Antrim. During the latter part of the Boer War he served as a Private in the 134th (Irish Horse) Company, Imperial Yeomanry. Prior to the Great War he was employed as a Produce Broker. He attested for the Army Reserve (Special Reserve) at Dublin on 4 September 1914, aged 33 years, 294 days. With the South Irish Horse he served in France/Flanders, 11 September 1915-28 August 1917 and was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field. In April 1918 he was discharged to a commission in the South Wales Borderers.
