Phillippus Lodewicus Pretorius was born on 13 October 1918. A Clerk by occupation, he attested for the Union Defence Force in 1942, aged 24 years. He served as an Able Seaman in the South African Naval Forces from April 1943 and was appointed a Telegraphist in August 1943 and was attached to the Royal Navy. Served on the South African manned frigate H.M.S. Swale, August 1945-January 1946. Discharged on 1 March 1946.
