Hamla was en route from Rio de Janeiro to Freetown, with a crew of 38 and four gunners. She was presumed to have been sunk on or about 18 August by a German raider known to be off Fernando de Noronha at the time. There were no survivors. Fothergill’s name is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial. He was the son of George Sagar Fothergill and Ada Sabina Fothergill, of West Kensington, London.
