Pair: Second Lieutenant E. M. Phillips, 2nd Battalion Otago Regiment

Eric Malcolm Phillips was born in Milton, Otago, New Zealand on 3 July 1895. An Engineering Apprentice by occupation, he attested for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force on 29 October 1915. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Otago Regiment, he entered Egypt on 14 February 1916 and proceeded to France in August 1916. In December 1917 he was appointed Temporary Company Quartermaster Sergeant and was confirmed in that rank in January 1918. In August he was posted to an Officer Cadet Unit and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in September 1918. In May 1919 he set sail from England for New Zealand and was transferred to the Reserve of Officers in January 1920.
