James Tootill was born in Woolfold, Bury, Lancashire and enlisted at Bury. Serving with the 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 2 June 1915. Two days later he was killed in action in Gallipoli.

His name is commemorated on the Helles Memorial.
