Andrew Taylor Emerson was born in Clontarf, Dublin and educated at Bective College and the Merchant Taylor’s School, Dublin. A Civil Servant by occupation, he attested for the South of Ireland Inperial Yeomanry on 31 May 1902 and re-attested for the South Irish Horse, as part of the Army Reserve (Special Reserve) at Dublin on 27 June 1908, aged 29 years. He was appointed a Sergeant in the South Irish Horse in May 1912. Awarded the Special Reserve L.S. & G.C. in October 1913 - one of 31 awards to the unit. During the war he joined the B.E.F. on 11 September 1915. The South Irish Horse later transferring to the 7th Battalion Royal Irish Regiment. Emerson was commissioned into the Labour Corps on 11 November 1917 and was demobilised on 27 January 1919.
