Rex Willington Lane was born on 3 August 1894. He entered the R.N.A.S. from school as a Temporary Sub Lieutenant on 25 May 1915. He attained the rank of Flight Lieutenant in October 1916 and was later a Captain in the R.A.F. Initially based at Roehampton, he was with No. 9 Kite Balloon Section from July 1916; then employed as an Inspector at Messrs. Airships Ltd from December 1916, and then with No. 14 Kite Balloon Section from April 1917. With copied service papers.
