Corporal George Ernest Gatling, A.S.C., came from Holmsood and entered into the France/Flanders theatre of war on 18 October 1914. For his wartime services in the A.S.C. he was mentioned in despatches and awarded the M.S.M. and the French Medaille Militaire. Gatling transferred to the R.A.F. in May 1918 and served on into 1919.
