China 1900, no clasp (J. H. Smith, C.E.R.A.2, H.M.S. Barfleur) nearly extremely fine £140-180

John Henry Smith was born in Plumstead, Kent on 18 August 1863. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 30 October 1884. Awarded the long service medal in 1895 when on Penguin. Served on Barfleur, October 1898-January 1902, seeing service in China. He attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in February 1903 and was pensioned in November 1906. With onset of war he returned to the Navy, serving at President, December 1914-June 1917. In the latter month he was promoted to Acting Artificer Engineer ‘to assist Engineer Overseer at Messrs. Yarrow & Co, Scotstoun.’ With copied service paper and research.
