William John Short was born in Southampton on 18 April 1847. Entering the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer in September 1871, he attained the rank of C.E.R.A. in April 1882. Served on Sultan, April 1882-December 1884; awarded the Egypt Medal 1882 with clasps for Alexandria and Suakin 1884. Served on Sphinx, January 1885-March 1887; awarded for service in Burma. With copied service papers.
