Reginald George Finnis was born in Hornsey, London on 11 August 1894. He entered the Royal Navy from school, becoming a Boy Artificer on 29 July 1910. Promoted to E.R.A. 5th Class in July 1914; Acting E.R.A. 4th Class in July 1915 and E.R.A. 4th Class in October 1916. He served on the monitor General Crauford, August 1915-April 1917 before going into the submarine service. In the latter part of the war he served on the submarine C.23, July 1917-December 1918. Just after the war he was posted to K.6, February-October 1919 but was fortunate enough to survive the experience.
