Robert Gerald Driscoll was born in Truro, Cornwall on 27 September 1885. A Boilermaker by occupation, he joined the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 21 March 1908 and was confirmed in that rank in September 1909. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class in March 1911 on Leander. During the Great War he served on the dreadnought battleship Bellerophon, June 1913-November 1917, being promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in March 1915 and seeing action at the battle of Jutland. Advanced to C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1920; he was awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1923. Driscoll attained the rank of C.E.R.A. 1st Class in April 1925 when on Ramillies.
