Sam Hunter Collingwood was born in Rochdale, Lancashire on 3 March 1877. A Fitter & Turner by occupation, he entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 16 October 1899, being confirmed in his rank in November 1900. He was promoted to E.R.A. 3rd Class on Vulcan; E.R.A. 2nd Class in 1906 on Enchantress and C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in August 1912 on Hecla. He served aboard the dreadnought battleship King George V, November 1912-August 1918, seeing action at the battle of Jutland and being advanced to C.E.R.A. 1st Class in July 1917. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in May 1915. Pensioned ashore on 18 October 1921.
