Thomas Birrel Baird was born in Burghead, Elgin, Scotland on 30 June 1862. He entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Engine Room Artificer 4th Class on 3 April 1884. Serving on Watchful, August 1884-July 1888, he was was confirmed in that rank in August 1885 and advanced to E.R.A. 3rd Class in April 1887. Promoted to E.R.A. 2nd Class in April 1891 when on Conquest; C.E.R.A. 2nd Class in January 1896 when on Bonaventure and C.E.R.A. 1st Class in January 1902 when on Redbreast. Awarded the Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. in 1894, he was pensioned in March 1906. Baird returned to service in August 1914 but was invalided with arterio sclerosis on 8 December 1915.
