Llewellyn Henry Gwynne who was born on 11 June 1863, son of Richard and Charlotte Gwynne of Kilvey, near Swansea. Educated at Swansea Grammar School and St. John’s Hall, Highbury. Entering the Church, he was Curate of St. Chad’s, Derby, 1886-89 and St. Andrew’s, Nottingham, 1889-92. Then Vicar of Emmanuel, Nottingham, 1892-99, after which he went out as a missionary to Khartoum after the recovery of the Sudan. Appointed Archdeacon of the Sudan in 1905. During the Great War he was a Volunteer Chaplain with the Expeditionary Force in France, August 1914-August 1915; Deputy Chaplain-General in France, 1915. For his services he was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 16 June 1916). Was Bishop of Khartoum, 1908-20; Bishop of Egypt and the Sudan, 1920-45 and Bishop of Egypt, 1945-46. Latterly living at The Chequers, Epping Uplands, Epping, Essex; he died on 3 December 1957.
