Horace James Willis was born on 6 December 1878. He was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the West India Regiment (from the Militia) on 25 January 1899. He was promoted to Lieutenant in the W.I.R. in December 1899 and Lieutenant in the Indian Army in August 1902. Employed with the King’s African Rifles, August 1903-December 1905. Willis attained the rank of Captain in the Indian Army in January 1908. Service in the Indian Army was with the 29th Lancers.
