The Indian General Service Medal awarded to Private William Haywood, 2nd Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers, dangerously wounded at Dwatoi, 22 November 1897

William Haywood was born in Mile End Old Town, Middlesex. A Coal Porter by occupation, he attested for the King’s Own Scottish Borderers at London on 29 September 1890, aged 18 years, 10 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in India, November 1892-March 1898. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 25 March 1898.

Serving with the Tirah Expeditionary Force, Haywood was dangerously wounded by a gunshot to the abdomen at Dwatoi on 22 November 1895.
