Thomas Williams was born in St. Andrews, London. He enlisted into the Military Train at Westminster on 4 October 1856. Appointed a Trumpeter in October 1856 and promoted to Trumpet Major in November 1857. Served in America for one year and in China for one year but was invalided to England from the latter posting in February 1861 due to heart disease. He was discharged in August 1865.
