India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1885-7 (J. W. C. Batterson, Ldg. Seaman, H.M.S. Bacchante) contact marks, nearly very fine £180-220

James William Charles Batterson was born in Lambeth, Surrey on 1 January 1861. He entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class aboard Fisguard on 26 September 1876 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class when on Implacable in November 1877. He was promoted to Ordinary Seam when on Emerald in January 1879 and Able Seaman on the same ship in August 1880; he was promoted to Leading Seaman in March 1884 when on Minotaur. Batterson served on Bacchante, April 1885-November 1888, being advanced to Petty Officer 2nd Class and Coxswain 2nd Class in April 1887. His last seagoing post was on Hotspur, January 1889-September 1893 during which time he received his medal for service in Burma.

Batterson was transferred to the Coast Guard as a Boatman at Newhaven in September 1893 and was promoted to Commissioned Boatman in March 1895. On 7 January 1899 he was pensioned.
