Candahar Ghuznee Cabul 1842 (Private John Mara, H.M. 40th Regt.) engraved naming, original steel clip and replacement silver straight bar suspension, edge bruising, contact marks, nearly very fine £550-650

John Mara was born in Pilltown, Co. Kilkenny. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 40th Regiment at Kilkenny on 24 March 1837, aged 20 years. With the regiment he served in the East Indies 3 years, 3 months and in Scinde, Beloochistan and Afghanistan 3 years, 11 months. He served at the battle of Maharajpoor, 29 December 1843 and was wounded. For his services he was awarded the Medal for Candahar, Ghuznee Cabul 1842 and the Maharajpoor Star 1843. He was discharged at Calcutta on 1 February 1845 being unfit for further service. With copied discharge papers.
