Austria, 50th Anniversary of Johann Schwerdtner as a Sculptor and Medallist, 1897, a bronze plaque by J. Schwerdtner, the artist sat in his studio with his engraving tools, pictures on walls, reverse cupid holds a scroll inscribed with details of his career in 17 lines, 60 x 45mm (BDM –, but cf. V, 441). Very detailed work, good very fine and patinated, rare and unusual (£40-60)

Johann Schwerdtner (b.1834), Viennese sculptor and medallist who founded his own business in 1867; the legend on the reverse of the medal contradicts some of the personal details about him quoted by Forrer and he was still alive at the outbreak of World War I
