Dammann for Arthus-Bertrand, standing figure of St Louis, reverse frontal elevation of Sainte-Chapelle, 80mm, edge stamped 64 (cf. ‘Médailles’, Fidem, 1 June 1938, p.16; cf. BDW 13, 393). The Crown of Thorns, acquired by Louis IX from the Latin emperor Baldwin II of Constantinople, was brought to Paris in 1239. Louis commissioned the Sainte-Chapelle, in the Palais de Justice on the Île de la Cité in the centre of Paris, to house it; the edifice was begun in 1246 and consecrated in 1248
