France, Lazare Carnot, 1889, a bronze medal by L.-E. Lazare Nicolas Marguerite Carnot (1752-1823), popularly known as the ‘organiser of victory’ during the French Revolution; elected to the Legislative Assembly in 1791, the National Convention in 1792 and the Directoire in 1794. Ousted in the coup d’état of 1797, he was recalled by Napoleon as Minister of War in 1800. His masterwork, De la Defense des Places Fortes, appeared in 1809. He later served as military governor of Antwerp in 1814, but after the Battle of Waterloo went into exile
