United States of America, Victories of Major-General Zachary Taylor in Mexico, 1846, a silver medal, unsigned [by J.T. Battin after W.G. Brown], uniformed bust right, stamped 22 below, reverse resolution of congress july 16th 1846, etc., legend, wreath of oak and palm around, 64mm (Julian MA22). Good very fine (£80-100)

Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), a career soldier with the nickname ‘Old Rough and Ready’ was placed in charge of the army defending the newly annexed state of Texas against a threatened Mexican invasion. Taylor took his troops to the Rio Grande where, through skilful use of light artillery, he won unexpected victories at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma on May 8 and 9 1846. Promoted to Major-General, he captured the popular fancy and won the Whig nomination for the Presidency. In a three-way contest, Taylor won 15 of the then 30 states and became the 12th President of the United States on 5 Mar. 1849, but he died suddenly on 9 July 1850
