France, Louis XIV, Quart d’Écu aux insignes, 170[1-3], Metz (Duplessy 1535; Ci. –). Struck over a Quart d’Écu aux 8L, 1691, fair to fine; believed unpublished as a denomination for this mint (£200-300)

Metz had only come into operation as a mint in 1693; although twelfth- and half-écus are known for 1701 and a small number of écus were struck in the period 1701-3, this is the first known quarter-écu for this period
